So I know what your thinking, what does a Thermostat have to do with our Reef Tanks. Well simply put we all have heaters on out tanks, but not all of us have chillers. What happens on those super hot summer days when your cooling fan or chiller can't keep up with cooling the water? What if you notice that your heater is malfunctioning and you need to shut it off but it 20 degrees outside?
This is where the Nest comes in. I have had it for about a year now and to say it is the best thermostat I have ever owned in an understatement. It has saved us a ton of money on our energy bills, and one day last summer helped cool down my reef tank. I will not go into the install or energy saving features here as this is not what this blog is about. But feel free to head over to www.nest.com to read about all of that information. But here is where it comes into play with our tanks:
The Nest Thermostat has built in WiFi and talks to the router in your home. Once connected to the internet the nest will be able to download the current weather information for your area to let you know if you are saving energy, but more importantly for us, it allows remote control of the thermostat through your smartphone or tablet.
So here is where it helped my tank last summer. It was my first summer with this reef tank and we had a very hot day in May. I was at work and I was checking in on my tank via my Apex controller app and noticed that the temperature in the tank was 86 degrees. That is way too hot! Since it was May, I had not turned on the Air Conditioning in the house yet nor did I instal a cooling fan on the tank. So at first I panicked. I am at work and there is nothing I can do about this, but then I remembered my Nest! I started up the App on my phone and turned the AC on and within 20 minutes or so the tank started to cool down and I had piece of mind again.
Once again this is a great little thermostat. Feel more control of your home, save a ton of energy, and who knew that it could help us with our Reef Tank!!!!
